Home to Bleacher Report, TNT, and TBS, Turner Sports is one of the most well-known names in sports media. It operates some of the most popular sports properties in the world, including the NBA, NCAA March Madness, and PGA Championship. This recent development is not surprising as Turner Sports has been branching into the web3 space for a while now.
In 2020, they unveiled their first online video gaming franchise built on Flow blockchain, Blocklete Games. This platform allows fans to "collect, train, trade and compete with unique digital athletes as they earn cash prizes and bragging rights along the way." In 2021, Bleacher Report, a part of Turner Sports, joined the NFT frenzy and sold nearly $1 million worth of collectible items.
Yang Adija, Turner Sports SVP for digital league business operations, growth & innovation, had this to say about the new partnership with Immutable X:
“We believe strongly that NFT-enabled, play-to-earn games are a new category in gaming that have tremendous potential. Immutable X has a proven track record and is a partner that can help us build out our portfolio with consumer-friendly technology that doesn’t hit users with exorbitant gas fees.”
Immutable X powers popular blockchain games such as Ember Sword, Gods Unchained, Illuvium, Guild of the Guardians, and Planet Quest. With StarkWare's innovative technology, Immutable X offers fast trade confirmations, massive scalability (about 9000 transactions per second) and a much improved developer and user experience.
Robbie Ferguson, Immutable co-founder and president, said in a statement that their strategic partnership with Turner Sports will usher in an expansion of sports content and drive engagement in the Web3 ecosystem.
With the reach that Turner Sports has, and the upgrades that platforms like Immutable X and StarkWare provide, this could be the beginning of a whole new era in sports entertainment. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming releases.
