Tingbits.com has meticulously studied 3,728 blockchain-powered games since 2019. <a href="https://tingbits.com/post/dead-nft-games/">Our previous report revealed a startling statistic: 11% of the 3,139 NFT games we tracked were dead.</a> This emphasizes the volatile nature of this emerging market, as well as the importance of careful analysis and strategic investment decisions. 

In this report, we investigate the current state of the blockchain gaming industry and offer critical insights for both serious gamers and investors. Our findings look into critical factors like network dominance, failure rates, and the stages of blockchain game development. We provide unique perspectives on blockchain game production and its market impact and essential information that every gamer and investor needs to know to navigate this dynamic space.

<h3>Blockchain Network Dominance</h3>

Based on our research, this graph shows the market share of various blockchain networks as of March 30, 2023. According to our data, Binance Smart Chain (BSC) has the largest market share of blockchain games at 37.9%, followed by Ethereum (ETH) at 19% and Polygon (MATIC) at 12.4%. These three networks account for nearly 70% of all tracked blockchain games, highlighting their market dominance. 

Even though BSC, ETH, and MATIC still have a strong hold on the market, other blockchain networks have started to make their mark. Solana (SOL) has a market share of 8.6%, WAX at 5.3%, Avalanche (AVAX) at 3.6%, and Immutable X (IMX) at 1.4%. It is worth noting that, despite their smaller market shares, these networks have demonstrated significant growth potential and have begun attracting interest from investors and developers in the blockchain gaming industry.

<h3>Failure Rates</h3>

We have kept track of 3,728 games built on various blockchain networks and checked how many have failed. Of these 934 or 25% failed. In this context, failure refers to games that were either abandoned or has been discontinued, inactive, or on indefinite hiatus.

Binance Smart Chain had the highest failure rate of the networks studied, with 31.88% of tracked games having failed. Ethereum, on the other hand, had a lower failure rate of 19.77%, followed by Solana with 18.79%. The failure rates of the other networks varied, with WAX at 27.69%, Avalanche at 23.88%, Cardano at 8%, and Immutable X at 10%. The results show that the failure rates of blockchain networks in the gaming industry vary widely. Binance Smart Chain, WAX, and Avalanche had the highest failure rates, while Ethereum and Solana had comparatively lower failure rates. Cardano and Immutable X had the lowest failure rates among all the networks.

<h3>Development Stages of Blockchain Games</h3>

According to the data collected, 27.3% (1,018 games) are still in development, 11.78% (439 games) are available for players to access, and 13.76% (513 games) are in beta testing. In addition, 12.85% (479 games) are doing pre-sales, and 9.3% (345 games) are available for alpha testing, which is aimed at hardcore gamers. However, the data shows that the blockchain gaming industry has had its share of difficulties, with 19.69% (734 games) being discontinued, 5.3% (196 games) remaining inactive, and 0.11% (4 games) on indefinite hiatus. These findings imply that not every blockchain game idea will translate into a marketable product.

The Upland and EOS Network Foundation have recently announced <a href="https://twitter.com/EOSnFoundation/status/1638628692418080768?s=20">Upland Hackathon 2023</a>, a competition for developers, artists, blockchain fans, and gamers to make web3 games and experiences for the Upland metaverse. The hackathon aims to empower participants to create unique, immersive, and community-driven web3 games that change how we play, interact, and socialize.

At the Upland Hackathon, teams can compete in one of three different categories. Each category has cash prizes and incubator programs. The first track is the FIFA World Cup track, in which participants must create football- or soccer-related projects using FIFA World CupTM and Upland assets. The winner of this track gets $10,000 and an incubator to make their idea come to life. The second-place prize is an incubator and $5,000.

The second track is the Innovation track, where participants can submit anything they want as long as it helps the Upland community. An optional recorded 3-minute pitch that introduces and explains the concept is also allowed. Teams must have a range of 2-5 people and include a mix of skills and roles such as a project leader, graphic/design, computer science, and communication marketing role.
